When eczema is severe & does not respond to other forms of treatment, immunosuppressant drugs are sometimes prescribed. These dampen the immune body system & could result in dramatic enhancements to the patient's eczema. However, immunosuppressants could cause side effects on the body. As such, patients must undergo regular blood tests & be closely monitored by a doctor. In the UK, the most commonly used immunosuppressants for eczema are ciclosporin, azathioprine & methotrexate.
