Botanical Name: Apium graveolens Indian Name: Ajmod or Ajwain ka patta

Origin, Distribution and composition

Celery is an important salad plant, consisting of the bulbous roots, green leaves and the stem. The leaves sprout directly from the fleshy roots. They are compound with long stalk; which are big and succulent. The fruits are small in size, dark brown in color and have peculiar flavor when cut open. The sees are brown in colour.

In India, the leaves are not so popular, but the root and the sees are commonly used in unani and ayurvedic medicine.

Celery has been cultivation for more then 2000 years. It was known to the Chinese from the 5th century B.C. in England, where it grew wild, it was known as smallage and used in medicines. In 16th and 17th centuries, it was brought into gardens and grown first as a medicinal plan and later as a flavoring of soups and stews.

Common name: Celery seed (E) Sanskrit: Aja-moda Latin: Apium graveolens–Semen(Umbelliferae)

As with all members of the Umbelliferae family with their ascendant flower and seed heads, Ajmoda is a digestive ‘lightener’. Its pungency and aromatic nature activate the digestive process and make light work of heavy food. Literally meaning ‘goat’s delight’, Ajmoda is a delicious shrub.
