Be very careful when purschasing this rare commodity. There is a lot of fake for sale - like ozokerite or propolis being sold as shilajit. Also, stay away from 'inventions' like powdered shiljit, tablest or tinctures. The problem is in the processing - even when using genuine shilajit most of its properties will be destroyed by the heat and chemicals involved in the processing. Only buy the real paste - it is expensive, but worth it. 50 grams is enough for over half a year. Genuine Shilajit smells like bitumen, is sticky and will dissolve in water, but not in alcohol. posted by Guest on 25 November 2011 21:35

Shilajit or Shilajatu is exudate of the mountain. Under the influence of scorching summer heat, a sticky resin like extract exudes from the hills and mountains, which solidifies within cracks and breaches to form shilajit. It needs to be essentially purified before internal use, as the ore comes laden with lot of impurities. Most commonly it is purified with triphala decoction.
