Ashtanga yog comprises yam, niyam, aasan, pranayam, pratyahar, dhaarnaa, dhyan and Samadhi like processes. Yama-niyama are related to the social life of a person. In general language this may be termed as karma sadhana (action based meditation). Yogasanas are apparently physical and mental process but indirectly its beneficial effects is also observed on the spiritual awakening. Pranayama is little physical but specially mentally spiritual activity. Pratyahar is mental and spiritual process and dharnaa and dhyana can be treated as entirely spiritual process. Its related to intellectual meditation (practices) and devotional meditations (practices).

To maintain this balance of mind there is aprovision of certain processes in the Tantrik (mystic) –yogic systems which is known as Ashtanga yoga. Laymen feel uncomfortable with the name of Ashtanga yoga and tantra but these processes are not so designed that it is difficult for the laymen to implement the same in their lives. To my personal knowledge millions of people are using these practices comprehensively. The householders and renounced both are involved in these practices and both receive its advantages in their respective areas.

ASHTANGA YOGA

The sage Patanjali enumerates Yoga and its stages in to eight limbs or eight stages of attaining super-consciousness which is the main goal of yogi. Patalnjali explained that the bodily purification and internal self purification is achieved to reach super-consciousness consists this eight spiritual practices where body and mind is involved.

  1. Yama [moral commandments or codes]

  2. Niyama [self-purification or maintaining or learning discipline or learning conducts]

  3. Asana [posture or poses of yoga]

  4. Pranayama [breath control in rhythmic way]

  5. Pratyahara [controlling senses]

  6. Dharana [concentration]

  7. Dhyana [meditation]

  8. Samadhi [Attaining super-consciousnessor “Moksha.”]

Among these Ashtanga yogas, Asana or yoga postures or poses do include and apart from these asanas or postures, pranayama and dhyana (meditation) are highlighted and followed by most of the people in order to maintain body-mind fitness.

As yoga poses are found very effective to keep the body fit by controlling over the mind, one can achieve certain stages and practically possible steps are “Asanasas or Postures” or “Yogasanas”, “Pranayama” and “Dhayna” among which Dhyana or Meditation is also very difficult task to achieve.

Hence, one should understand the concept of yoga and yoga postures, which can be implemented practically in modern world to achieve the best from it.

As these poses and postures, and meditation are a part of yoga, and this yoga is having very positive impact on modern lifestyle to avoid stress and mental strain.

Those who are doing yoga regularly, they can attain positive aura and can defeat many tasks in their day-today life, which is proven.

With regards, Dr.Vijay.
