Types of yoga asanas and poses

There are four ways to carry out the asanas- by laying, sitting, standing and in the inverted positions meaning the head bottom, leg up position. The asanas carried out in standing position are difficult and not beneficial for the cardiac or chronic patients. For such persons the mudras are used so that their various cycles are stimulated through various mental processes (activities). The asans done in the lying position are normally beneficial for all persons. It has no unnecessary pressure on the heart. When a learned practitioner teaches a asana then he absolutely keeps in the mind (takes care of) the heart and brain. The asanas performed in the inverted position are normally not beneficial for the householders, for those who have weak muscles and for those who have irregular diet.

Yoga poses and postures

Yoga poses and postures are one and the same. The asanas or yoga poses are collection of postures where each and every body part is involved at one point which is a part of yoga.

Postures or yoga poses are steps one has to follow while doing any kind of asana. These steps or poses are very important to attain proper result of particular asana or yoga posture.

For easy understanding, the poses or compared with the animal postures, or any instruments or any articles.

These are the examples how the asana should be performed.

If a performer fulfils all the steps and attains a proper posture, then it is called particular yogasana or yoga posture.

Example: “Tadasana” also called mountain pose. Stand with feet together making a forty-five degree angle with the ground, hands at your sides, eyes looking forward. Breathe normally. There are many steps to attain tadasana, like standing in erect, tightening knees, stomach in, chest forward, etc. At last to attain the final posture.

In this way, the poses are explained and compared with animals or any instruments or any similes.

Other asanas like

Balasana-Child Pose

Bhujangasana-Cobra Pose

Dhanurasana-Bow Pose

Garudasana -Eagle Pose etc are examples.

With regards, Dr.Vijay.
